Norton school

Thompson the old one was my last. I went to Norton Board until and then onto Fredrick Nattrass. Is there anyone out there who was there about the same time?

She was there from or , and left in when we moved to South Bank. I was there from until when I went to Holy Trinity in Stockton. My second cousin Jeannie still lives next to the school, her mother Jean, my cousin, and various other Norton cousins, still Norton residents, were also students.

We were in the same class, she gave me a class photograph which I still have. I have only happy memories of Norton and I love visiting. I remember Mrs Kane who had a cane, and how she broke it on a boy named Garry? I remember Mr Hamell who used to threaten the use of his plimsol on the boys, at the time I thought he had size 23 feet. Mrs higgins was so sweet… just adorable. Mr Brown was everything a head teacher should be, he knew everyone and their families, and everything that went on in that school.

I adressed him as sir, would I have dared to address him any other way? The dining hall, sheesh! I once pushed my tray on the table, and then walked straight out of the hall, to be followed by a teacher, who gave me the telling off of my life for leaving the dining room in such a rude manner, until I revealed the bee sting on my palm, and my explanation of not crying at the table, and disturbing everyone.

I seem to recall a boy called David Yeoman, running into an open window while playing football and knocking himself out. The free pears were wonderful, made the walk to school easy for a whole month. We did have to use the side entrance to enter school when I was there, and there were new? Ohh and Lizzie my mate hated being called Lizzie Dripping , the teachers were always threatening to split us up… Ohh and Elcoats the sweet shop, run by two sisters I think, absolute heaven for 1p.

Great memories of a great little school. Instead there was a modern inturned gate at the other corner of the frontage next to the cobbled goods entrance. The school premesis was split into three; Preschool, infants and juniors and you had to stay in your area and not mix at playtime.

I remember Mrs Bell who had her hair in a bun, the swarm of ladybirds one summer and getting an old leather football in my face while waiting outside in the dinner queue! Oh and there was the incident with the cricket ball… and the climbing frame. Seems the place was jinxed — or was I accident prone? Attended the school in the 70s starting in the Nursery right up until leaving to go to Albany Comprehensive in I can remember Miss Grainger looked like what we would nowadays consider to be a Goth.

Her prize was a Ford Transit Motorhome. She came in with a packet of Fruit Pastilles for the class. Fridays was the sports day, and having only concrete playgrounds, we were all ceremoniously marched to William Newton. Mr Brown the headmaster later married one of the teachers in the nursery please correct me if this is wrong. I remember melting crisp bags on the heater flue.

It brings back memories when I walk under the arch even now. Remember Elcoats sweet shop just up the street was great. Colin Mee now there is a name long from the past. I that was called Coates? I now live in America but visit my sister who lives in Billingham and attended William Newton. I remember a girl called Judith Pollard and Julie Trenholm. Did you live in the corner house on Billingham bank? There was a pond in the back garden with a little bridge over it, Judith Pollard is my sister.

I also live in the US. I went to norton board at the same time, great days my friends included stephen thomas, geoffrey walker, there were two of them, and many others. I can also remember a girl called cynthia black, if i remembrr correctly our teacher was called mr lightfoot and we used to answer questions at the end of the day to get out of class a few minutes early.
